Artist Spotlight - Common
Originally known as "Common Sense" (but forced to give that moniker to a ska band of the same name) Lonnie Rashied Lynn was born on the southside of Chicago and first hit the scene in the early 90's. While groups like N.W.A. made gangsta rap the hottest music trend of the decade, Common stayed true to his roots. As underground jazz-rap makes a move to the top of the pop charts his albums, along with collaborative works with the likes of Kanye West (also the producer on his newest album, "Be"), Lauryn Hill, and The Roots' ?uestlove, are taking their rightful place. Which means checking out Common just makes good sense.
