Kim Carnes (born July 20, 1945) is an American singer-songwriter. Born in Los Angeles, California, Carnes now resides in Nashville, Tennessee, where she continues to write music. She also tours extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe. Carnes began her career as a songwriter in the 1960s writing for other artists while performing in local clubs and working as a session background singer with the famed Waters sisters (featured in the acclaimed documentary, 20 Feet From Stardom). After she signed her first publishing deal with Jimmy Bowen, she released her debut album Rest on Me in 1972. Her 1980 duet with Kenny Rogers, "Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer", was featured on Rogers' triple-platinum-selling album, Gideon (album), for which Carnes and her husband, David Ellingson penned all 10 songs. Success followed with her first Top 10 hit, a cover version of "More Love", in 1980. Following this, her single "Bette Davis Eyes" became the biggest U.S. hit of the year in 1981, and won her a Grammy Award for Record of the Year. A number of subsequent pop hits followed, including "Crazy in the Night," "What About Me," "Crazy in Love" and "Make No Mistake (He's Mine)," a duet with Barbra Streisand which, as "Make No Mistake (She's Mine)," was also a Number One country song for Kenny Rogers and Ronnie Milsap. In 1984, she was one of the featured singers on the USA for Africa single, "We Are the World." Carnes, whose songs had also been cut by several country acts including Anne Murray, Tim McGraw, Deana Carter, Tanya Tucker, Matraca Berg and Reba McEntire and Vince Gill, among others, relocated from Los Angeles to Nashville in 1994.
As a songwriter, Carnes co-wrote the Number One hit "The Heart Won't Lie" with Donna Weiss. She also composed "I'll Be Here Where the Heart Is" for the 1983 film Flashdance, which won Carnes her second Grammy. In addition to her 1988 release, View from the House, which contained the Top 10 Adult Contemporary hit, "Crazy in Love," her extensive discography includes the albums Sailin', Barking at Airplanes,Light House and Chasin' Wild Trains.
